During a recent J.P. Morgan forum, CEO Christine Barone outlined that while physical expansion remains a priority — with plans to enter the Florida market — the company is also pursuing various growth strategies to maintain its trajectory.
“What we’ve historically seen as we go into new markets, is that customizable energy drinks are very popular with new guests, because they are new products to market,” Barone said. “When we first went into the Phoenix market, we had low AUVs — people didn’t even know who we were. Now when we go into new markets like Florida, we already have fans in the market. National awareness of the brand can be driven by physical locations, and it can be driven by excited people on social media doing free marketing for you.”
Enhancing its digital presence is another crucial aspect of Dutch Bros’ strategy. The company is leveraging word of mouth and promotions to expand its customer base while increasing digital engagement through its rewards program and omnichannel strategies.
Naturally as Dutch Bros has continuously gone viral for unique types of drinks, it is also helping their reach and increasing anticipation for new locations to open. With their distinct brand identity it stands out to their large client base in Utah, where many of the videos go viral, and where the large population of Mormons don’t drink coffee. Apart from that specific population though, Dutch Bros has gone so viral that their popularity is not only confined to that population.
In addition to its online presence expansion, Dutch Bros is updating its technology infrastructure. Key initiatives involve improving the Dutch Bros Rewards program, which, despite its three-year existence, accounts for 65% of purchases. The company is also piloting mobile order and pay options and testing different store prototypes to reduce construction costs and optimize lease arrangements.
